‘The Naked Gun’ Trailer Drops With Liam Neeson

From the files of the Police Squad, “The Naked Gun” is back on August 1 in theaters everywhere — the rebooted Liam Neeson version that is. Paramount Pictures has released the theatrical trailer for the continuation of the series from which the similarly-named Leslie Nielsen mined box office gold.

In the new film, Neeson plays Lt. Frank Drebin, Jr., son of Nielsen’s Frank Drebin character. Along for the sure-to-be-wacky ride are Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. Written by Dan Gregor, Doug Maud, and Akiva Schaffer, the movie was directed by Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins.

Neeson is not known for playing comedy — although Nielsen wasn’t either prior to his straight-faced “Don’t Call Me Shirley” turn in 1980’s “Airplane!” Neeson told ComingSoon.com last year that he needed to prove his comedic chops.

“I’m slightly nervous of it. A little Stephen Colbert sketch or Ricky Gervais, I’m OK because it’s short. But a whole film, we’ll see. We’ll see,” the action star said. In 2022, after it was announced the movie was in development, Neeson cracked, “It’ll either finish my career or bring it in another direction. I honestly don’t know.”

The last “Naked Gun” entry was released in 1994, just months before co-star O.J. Simpson’s became embroiled in controversy after Simpson faced trial — something the first teaser trailer for the reboot cheekily referenced. The original trilogy was based off a failed ABC TV series titled “Police Squad,” also starring Nielsen.

Anderson makes her first big screen appearance since her much-heralded movie comeback “The Last Showgirl,” which netted her SAG and Golden Globes nominations. She told Seth Meyers in January that the “high comedy” of “The Naked Gun” was something she’d “always wanted to do.”

“And Liam is such a gentleman. He’s such a sweetheart, such a love, and we just had a great connection. And Akiva is a wonderful director,” Anderson said. “But what a difference, going from an indie film to a Paramount ‘Naked Gun.’”

Anderson added that the “Saturday Night Live” crew was on the set, throwing out new jokes throughout the shoot. “Some were funny, some weren’t, but some were — most of them were funny. Liam is hysterical. You’re not going to see it coming. That’s how good he is.”
